PHOTO: A portion of Washington Avenue was temporarily shut down Wednesday afternoon after a small porch fire broke out at a multi-family dwelling. The fire was reported at 1:35 p.m. at 1010 Washington Ave., between 10th and Racine streets. That entire section of Washington (Highway 20) was closed for about 30 minutes as the Racine Fire Department battled the fire. The Fire Department first responded to a call of smoke possibly coming from the roof a home at about 1:35 p.m. The three families that reside in the structure were inside the building when the fire started but were able to safely evacuate. “I came out and my house was on fire,” said Shaquanda Davidson, a resident of the building. “I started throwing water on it and knocking on the neighbors’ doors.” The official cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Wednesday afternoon, according to a Fire Department press release. No injuries were reported and damage to the property was estimated at $3,000. The residents of the building were able to return to their homes once the home was deemed safe, the release said. Racine police and officials from the city Building Department also assisted at the call as did crews from We Energies.
