PHOTO: The Racine Fire Department and the Racine County Water Rescue Response Team, comprised of area law enforcement members and firefighters, have been participating in dive training sessions this week to gain certification in specific areas of dive rescues. The training began Monday and continues through today near the Fifth Street Boat Launch. The focus of this training is for “level-one:” rapid deployment, drysuit certification, full face mask certification and blackwater (reduced visibility) training. Two trainers from Shokan, N.Y.-based Lifeguard Systems Inc., Butch Hendrick and Tommy Mastroeni, led the sessions. They train and certify divers around the world. Training consisted of a rescue component, but also focused heavily on diver safety. “The first concern is the citizens,” Hendrick said. “But if something goes wrong, who is going down to save them? We have to take care of our own as well.” Divers started the week in a pool going over use of their equipment. They learned everything from how to put on a wet suit to inverting when air flows toward the feet.
