A dispute between the village of Lake Hallie and four towns over how the Chippewa Fire District is funded is winding toward a conclusion. Besides Lake Hallie, the fire district includes the towns of Hallie, Howard, Lafayette and Wheaton. “The parties reached a settlement at the medication on July 19, 2016. But the agreement needs to be approved by the boards of the respective municipalities to become binding,” Attorney Lori M. Lubinsky wrote in a court document dated July 20. The village brought the lawsuit against the towns of Hallie, Howard, Lafayette and Wheaton in March 2015. The Lafayette Town Board approved the settlement on Monday, Aug. 1, town Chairman David Staber said. Still left to vote on the settlement are the towns of Hallie and Wheaton. Staber said the settlement was a compromise. “It kept the fire district together... Everybody came out with something,” he said.
