Residents from three apartments were displaced after a kitchen fire broke out Sunday night, according to a release from the Madison Fire Department. Firefighters were called at 10:18 p.m. to River’s Edge Apartments at 1766 Fordem Avenue on a report of an alarm activation. Neighbors also reported seeing fire on the top floor of the building. When firefighters arrived, the resident of the apartment where the fire started said it started in the kitchen and he attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish himself. Firefighters said thick smoke had filled the third-floor hallway and the apartment. They said they found fire on top of the stove and extension along the adjacent wall and cabinets. They knocked down the fire and immediately began overhaul of the apartment to make sure all hot spots were cooled. The ceiling was also opened, and charring was noted on the wood inside. The occupant of the apartment told firefighters he was asleep when the fire started, and he does not believe the stove was on when he went to bed. He said the smell of smoke woke him up, which is when he rushed to the hallway to grab the fire extinguisher. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $35,000.
