You may have seen them: on Thursday and Friday, a procession of firefighters braved rain in their annual Fill the Boot fundraiser, to help combat Muscular Dystrophy. More than 20 members of the Fond du Lac Fire Department Local 400 fanned out across downtown to collect donations from passing cars and pedestrians. Andrew Aird, director of the union's charitable fund, huddled under an awning along Main Street Thursday, while rain came down. He said the fire department union raised about $15,000 for research into Muscular Dystrophy, ALS and other related diseases, that constrict motion. Since the 1950s, the International Association of Firefighters and the Muscular Dystrophy Association have raised funds for this cause. Aird said his team of fire fighters hope to break last year's fundraising totals, despite the rain. And if you missed your chance to donate last week, don't worry, firefighters will be back in downtown Fond du Lac to fundraise again on Aug. 26.
