When severe storms rolled through Plum City Tuesday, July 5, the fire whistle didn’t go off in town; it wasn’t hooked up to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, who can set sirens off remotely, said Plum City Fire Chief PJ Hines. Hines and firefighter Ron Anderson told Plum City Village Board members July 11 that firefighters don’t receive any more advanced notice than residents when it comes to severe weather warnings. Village clerk Michele Burg said firefighters used to be warned, but that’s no longer the case. “Years ago, the firemen received a page or somehow were notified that there was severe weather in the area and one of them would go to the station and sound the alarm,” Burg said. “But with the new technology, the sheriff's department can remotely sound the alarm in Plum City.” The board voted to spend not more than $2,300 to have the village siren remotely hooked up to the Sheriff’s Department. As far as storm damage cost estimates in the village, Burg said she didn’t have a total; however, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church reported damage, as well as two homes, Burg said. “Some fences had damage and I heard about five cars had damage from falling trees and limbs,” Burg said. “It was amazing that with the amount of trees that fell that no one was hurt or that there wasn’t more damage.” Mobile home park residents will receive a letter reminding them of the need to have an emergency plan in place in case of severe weather. Street painting wasn’t completed that week due to the storm. Village employees reported the quarry was full with tree and debris cleanup.
