Two of three sites being considered for a new fire station on Eau Claire’s north side would reduce overall response times for ambulance and fire calls, an important factor in determining that station’s location, city Fire Chief Chris Bell said Monday. But both of those sites — on property along Galloway Street across from Indianhead Foodservice Distributor and at a site along Malden Avenue — pose other issues, Bell told the Eau Claire City Council. The 5-acre Malden Avenue site is privately owned, meaning the city must negotiate to buy it, adding to expenses. The city already owns the 11.4-acre Galloway Street location, but that property has uneven topography, making building there challenging, Bell said.
