Most retirees travel for pleasure. Rich Meeker travels to save lives. Some 85 percent of Meeker’s rescue nurse cases take him abroad to care for patients and bring them back to the United States for care closer to home. Meeker, 58, is retired from the Kenosha Fire Department. A registered nurse for 35 years, Meeker began working under contract with On Call International Inc. in August 2013. His assignments have sent him to 33 countries on five continents, where he has picked up primarily Americans, who have fallen ill or been seriously injured, and cared for them while bringing them back mainly to U.S. medical facilities in 30 states. “I had a guy who was a CEO for a power company, very stoic,” Meeker said, recounting a trip to France last year to bring a heart attack patient back to Florida.
