Several firefighters have threatened to leave after the town board moved forward with establishing a municipal fire department without the current fire chief. The Town of Wilson Board on Monday passed an ordinance and set of bylaws establishing the municipal fire department, but did not approve an amendment that would allow current Fire Chief Brian Schmitt to retain his job when the department switches from a corporation to a municipal entity. “I’ll be the chief until Dec. 31 and then at that time I’ll be done," Schmitt said. "I’ll be resigning because I will not be qualified under their rules.” The Town Board ordinance requires officers within the fire department to have a certain level of certification — but the current chief, who has been in charge for seven years, does not have the certification. Schmitt said he took the classes in the '90s to become certified, but was unable to take the test. Now to become certified he would have to take all the classes over again, which he said he is not willing to do.
