While most families spent the last few weeks buying necessities for the new school year, law enforcement and emergency crews worked on skills necessary to keep all students safe. NewsChannel 7's Jeff Thelen found out how crews trained for active shooter situations.
Police and firefighters have to do it all the time.
Training for a worst-case scenario, like a school shooting, hoping they never have to use those skills in real life.
NewsChannel 7 cameras were given exclusive TV access to the important lessons.
It looked like scary stuff in the halls of Wausau West High School: police escorted rescue crews into classrooms to help shooting victims.
Luckily, it was just a drill. One of the officers involved was Wausau West Resource Officer Jeff Schremp.
"A response to an active shooter at a school, where we have victims that need medical care, so police and fire responded to those victims, treated them and got them removed out of the building," Schremp said.
Reponse to man-made tragedy has evolved over the years.
