PHOTO: The third annual Kickin' It For Kids kickball tournament was held at McGaw Park on Aug. 20. The event benefitted REACH-A-Child, a nonprofit based out of Madison that helps first responders comfort children they come across in a traumatic situation by giving them a children’s book. The event also included appearances from state and local law enforcement and first responders, corn hole, a bounce house and other kids' activities, concessions and a silent auction. This year's event raised $7,5000, and part of the proceeds will fund the program with Fitchburg fire, EMS and police, said REACH-A-Child marketing director Eric Salzwedel. "That way they have our program to help comfort and distract children they come across in traumatic situations with the power of a children’s book," he wrote in an email to the Star. "The first responders will also be able to give the child a drawstring backpack to take with them and put the book and any other belongings they have with them."
