The La Crosse Fire Department hopes to add a fifth fire station on the city’s South Side after data analysis showed it would allow them to better respond to at least 17 percent of emergency calls. While the department hasn’t yet drafted an official proposal, Fire Chief Gregg Cleveland and Division Chief Mark Amann told the Common Council Tuesday that bringing the city back up to five stations by building a new one near the intersection of 33rd Street and Mormon Coulee Road would support the city’s growth and protect its citizens. “We have a strong infrastructure, and we want to continue to support that strong infrastructure so our recreational activities can continue to thrive and grow, and our city can continue to grow,” Cleveland said. The city of La Crosse went down to four fire stations in 1967 and has gone from 102 to 93 people since then while adding additional job duties to the people left in the department. The remaining stations are numbered 1-4 and located on Fifth Avenue South, Monitor Street, Losey Boulevard and Gillette Street. Cleveland based his decision to request an additional station on global industry standards which take into account the square mileage of the city as well as the acceptable distance for response.
