A mom was able to get her child unbuckled from the back seat of their car Sunday morning before it went up in flames on Northport Drive, according to a release. The woman was driving a 2008 Chrysler 300 with a man down Northport Drive just before noon when they heard some crackling coming from the trunk of the car, officials said. Within half of a city block, the occupants could see smoke and then flames coming from the back of the vehicle, they said. The woman pulled over, unbuckled her child and stepped away before the flames consumed the vehicle, according to the release. Firefighters could see heavy, black smoke coming from where the car was parked when they arrived, officials said. Firefighters put the fire out with foam and water, but not before the flames melted the interior of the car down to the metal springs of the seats and the metal frame. A car seat left just outside the vehicle was almost melted down by the flames, according to the release.
