No action will be taken against the Merrill city administrator and fire chief regarding some county owned property that was improperly removed from the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. “... although not in violation of city ordinance or polices, [Johnson's and Savone's actions] were in poor judgment”, read a fax from Merrill Mayor Bill Bialecki sent to media outlets Thursday. In August, the Merrill City Council hired an outside investigator to examine if City Administrator Dave Johnson had the legal authority to allow Fire Chief Dave Savone and a friend to take city property. Emails obtained by NewsChannel showed Johnson gave Savone permission to take more than 10 doors, frames and shutters from the recently torn down Schultz building. In the emails Johnson called the building pieces "old wood stuff," saying they would have been demolished when the building was destroyed to make way for a new Enrichment Center/Expo Hall. According to the city of Merrill's website the property in question has since been returned.
