Town of Wilson fire chief called it quits Tuesday and was followed out the door by several firefighters.
The now former fire chief's tenure with the department has been a point of contention since the fire department switched from a private corporation to a municipal fire department on Jan. 1 of this year.
The town board set bylaws for the municipal fire department that requires the department's fire chief to have a certain certification. However, the now former fire chief, Brian Schmitt, said he went through the certification classes in the 90's, but never took the final exam, so he does not have the certification.
