What probably sounded like a fun idea on Lake Monona Friday night brought out the lake rescue team, when a boat was seen on fire, but the fire turned out to be in a fire pit in a canoe, used to help celebrate a lighted paddle cruise. Nobody was hurt in the incident, which was reported at 9:18 p.m., the Madison Fire Department said. Engine Co. 3 was dispatched after 911 got calls about a watercraft on fire, so firefighters used binoculars from the shore near Monona Terrace to check out what was going on. "They were able to identify which watercraft had a fire on board, an aluminum canoe being towed by at least one kayak," said spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster.
