Matt Jaggar has responded to multiple fires during his 19 years as an Eau Claire firefighter, but Wednesday marked the first time he did so while off duty. Jaggar, a battalion chief, was driving along Main Street on the East Side Hill shortly before 11:30 a.m. when he noticed smoke in the sky. His firefighting instincts took over, and he decided to track down the source of the smoke. A short drive later he discovered a garage attached to the house at 406 Talmadge St., and the house’s back side, engulfed in flames. He parked his vehicle and ran to the house, knocking on the front door.
