Buffalo County authorities continue to investigate the cause of a fire Tuesday morning that killed a father and his 2-year-old daughter at their Buffalo City home and do not suspect foul play, Sheriff Mike Schmidt-knecht said. Douglas Shawley, 30, and Genevieve Shawley, 2, were killed in the fire, according to sheriff’s office officials. On Tuesday state fire marshal staff, the sheriff’s office and others sifted through the charred rubble of the trailer home where the Shawleys lived on Circle Drive along Highway OO, searching for clues about the fire’s cause. “We don’t know yet what caused this fire,” Schmidtknecht said, noting the situation was especially tragic because it involved the death of a young child.
