Madison firefighters rushed to frozen Lake Monona Wednesday morning to rescue a reported dog stranded on the ice, but the dog turned out to be an eagle. The call for an animal rescue came in around 7:40 a.m. by a passerby who saw what she believed to be a dog on the ice about 100 yards from shore near Monona Terrace. Engine Company 4 and the lake rescue team were dispatched, but the rescue team was called off when firefighters saw the eagle, which was not in distress and flew away. "Firefighters searched the area one more time to make sure there wasn't a dog somewhere," said spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster. "None was found, and it is believed the eagle, at a passing glance, was mistaken for a dog."
