In an effort to step up recruitment for volunteer fire fighters, three Southern Door High School juniors began training this week for a possible opportunity in the field. Austin Vandertie, Nathan Lenius, and Jared Baudhuin have added trainings and meetings at the Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to their slate as students. B.U.G. Fire Chief Curt Vandertie says conversations on the program started a few months ago as they focused on how to make it work instead of reasons to not follow through on the idea. Vandertie says the program is similar to other Door County departments’ use of Explorer posts to introduce young adults to possible careers in firefighting or other areas of public safety. Interested students can contact Vandertie if they would like to enroll into the program.
