A Trempealeau man will serve two years on probation for trying to set fire to a village church last summer. John Humm, 19, pleaded guilty Monday in Trempealeau County Circuit Court to arson, criminal damage to property and resisting officers. Police found Humm pouring gasoline through a broken window at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Trempealeau early July 3 and a fire in the parking lot, according to the complaint. He fled and fell down a 40-foot embankment, refused orders to show officers his hands and removed a probe from a stun gun from his back. He was hit with a stun gun a second time and gave police a fake name during arrest. Humm had a 0.14 percent alcohol level.
