Two fired City of Sun Prairie paramedics have been awarded more than a half a million dollars by an arbitrator after being cleared of any wrongdoing in a patient’s care. City officials say they will meet on Feb. 7 and decide whether to pay or appeal the award in court. Sun Prairie EMS Paramedics John Uebelacker and Matthew Schaller were dismissed on Feb. 7, 2014, after the department found fault in their care of a patient on Jan. 14, 2014 and pulled their credentials. The paramedics were later cleared of wrongdoing by state EMS officials. Arbitrator Richard McLaughlin ruled in a decision in 2015 that the city did not have just cause to fire the paramedics and that they should be hired back and be compensated for salary lost. McLaughlin ruled that the SPEMS investigation was faulty and biased.
