The way emergency responders search for missing persons is changing in Dane County. "In the past, traditional search, methods would be where they line up to do a grid search," says Middleton firefighter Josh Larson. But Middleton Fire Department wants to be ahead of the curve when it comes to locating missing persons. When time is of the essence, Larson says, a drone can fly low and fast, using a camera to home in on small details and employing thermal sensors. Larson helped a lead a team exercise today at Pheasant Branch Conservancy where crews searched for a "missing" individual who was hiding in the woods. Using drone technologies and handheld thermal sensors called FLIRs, officials can speed up the time it takes to locate a missing person.
