A house on East Conant Street near downtown Portage was gutted by fire Tuesday morning, sending up a plume of smoke visible from blocks away and leaving a family of five without a home. “I thought, ‘What the hell is he hollering about?’” said neighbor Kim Kelly, who was in her living room at the time. “And when I looked I saw flames coming out of the window of the house.” She yelled for someone to call 911, and after Kelly and her husband grabbed a few things and their dog and got outside, they saw that their next-door neighbors were already out of their house at 216 East Conant St., which had flames pouring out the windows. Portage Police Department Officer Teresa Johnson and Lt. Keith Klafke were at the scene at 9:24 a.m. finding the house already engulfed and the residents, Amanda King, her fiance Ryan Levzow and his 3-year-old son, and a puppy, watching from the other side of the street.
