The Portage Fire Department put out a house fire on Hamilton Street on Tuesday afternoon, responding with the benefit of some great fortune, and at the same time, not quite enough. “I was heading to work and I drove by the house and something didn’t look right,” said department Capt. Robert Wood, who happened by 826 Hamilton St. about noon. “I saw some small flames and I called it in.” After a second look, Wood said that he could see several inches of flames coming out of the siding over the exposed basement, beneath a small deck leading to the front door.
