An unmanned garbage truck caught fire near the city’s Pearl Street Facility at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. No one was injured, although smoke could be seen from more than a mile away. The vehicle was idling in the city’s bulk garbage lot at 830 Racine St. when heavy smoke and fire were observed coming from the cab, according to a release from the Racine Fire Department. Public Works employees throw excess garbage into the truck throughout the day, said Bill Folstrom, the superintendent for the Department of Public Works. “It just started by itself,” he said. The fire originated in the front engine compartment, and the cause is still under investigation, according to the fire department release.
