Aug. 23 in 1998 was a typical late-August day in Door County — warm, humid, enjoyed by those stretching the last few days of summer out by staying a just a little longer in the county. The frantic pace within the county, experienced all summer long, was slowly draining as families returned home to prepare for school. While many families were heading home, the county was far from empty. Restaurants were busy, shoppers were enjoying the unique stores of northern Door, instruments were being warmed up for a performance at the Gibraltar Auditorium, and the state parks were full of explorers enjoying the late summer warmth.
