The Altoona City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to allow the city to charge nonresidents and nontaxpayers who require emergency calls that exceed $1,000. “Unless we do something, we’re not going to bill,” Altoona fire Chief Mark Renderman said. “We should be doing something significant, and it has to exceed $1,000 for us to start billing.” The Altoona Fire Department’s costly response June 27 to a downtown vehicle fire for an out-of-town contractor hauling hay ignited the idea for the ordinance, he said at an earlier meeting. That fire cost the city about $2,800. In 2017, four calls exceeded $1,000, Renderman said.
