A fire in an east side apartment that started due to frayed electrical wires may have been caused by raccoons, the Madison Fire Department reported. The fire department was dispatched Monday evening to the 1100 block of East Mifflin Street, where arriving firefighters found light smoke coming from the apartment. The homeowner said a breaker tripped after he turned on a light switch, at which point he noticed smoke coming from the attic. When firefighters accessed the attic, they discovered insulation burning, as well as charring on the structural components and multiple wires that behind the insulation that had been chewed through by a small rodent.
