Nobody was injured after a fire cost thousands of dollars in damages to a home on the west side of Madison early Tuesday morning. The home suffered more than $5000 in damages after improperly discarded rags and paper towels used for staining spontaneously combusted, starting a garage fire. Fire crews arrived at a garage with black smoke coming from the eaves on Allen Street that was filling both Allen Street and Kendall Avenue with smoke around 12:30 a.m., according to the Madison Fire Department. Firefighters rang the doorbell of the home to alert the homeowners that there was a fire in their garage. The residents retrieved a garage door opener and handed it to firefighters. With an attack line ready, firefighters opened the garage door and knocked down the fire with approximately 50 gallons of water. The homeowners told fire investigators that a building and design company had been working on the interior of their house and were staining wood on Monday.
