VIDEO: Volunteer firefighters have to be ready to respond anytime, anywhere. "I learned how to stay on my toes and expect the unexpected," said 16-year-old Austin Plowman. But junior firefighters have a little bit of a smaller window of when they can respond. "They can only come on calls on school nights until nine o'clock," said Arbor Vitae Fire Chief Mike Van Meter. Noah Flann and Austin Plowmann are two of Arbor Vitae Fire Department's junior firefighters. The junior firefighter program started in 2002 when some of the firefighter's kids wanted to get involved. The program teaches responsibility and teamwork. Junior members have to maintain a certain GPA and remain out of trouble.
