VIDEO: On Tuesday night, the City of Madison honored a firefighter who died in the line of duty. Richard Garner, Jr., 29, collapsed on April 1 within 24 hours of his final shift. Madison's City Council approved a resolution to rename Fire Engine No.10 in his honor. Fire Chief Steven Davis says Garner was special to him since Garner was part of the first class he hired as chief. "He truly was a changer in our organization, and when he passed away on April 1 of this year, it changed the Madison Fire Department, hopefully for the better," said Davis. "And I think it has." One of Garner's former co-workers said his spirit will watch over the firefighters who serve on the truck and the citizens the truck will serve in the future.
