PHOTO: A fire that engulfed six vehicles on an auto carrier completely shut down Interstate 94 Tuesday afternoon while authorities worked to put the fire out and clean up the wreckage. At 2:17 p.m., the Racine County Sheriff’s Office responded to I-94 near Kraut Road after multiple callers reported the fire, according to a press release. Due to heavy smoke, all northbound lanes were closed at about 2:36 p.m., and when fire personnel arrived, the southbound lanes were also closed. Once the fire was out, all southbound lanes and one northbound lane were opened. The auto carrier held nine vehicles, six of which were destroyed in the fire, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A damage estimate was not yet available Tuesday evening.
