Madison College hosted its first-ever firefighter training session geared exclusively for women Saturday. Twenty-five women attended the all-day training, which is designed to give women a preview of what they might expect from a firefighting career, along with physical conditioning tips and networking opportunities. The event was run by women who have already undergone firefighter training along with active firefighters. Madison College instructor Amanda Hornung said she hopes the event will encourage more women to pursue a career in firefighting. Nationally, only 7 percent of firefighters are women, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
