The sound of a fire alarm found its way into her dreams. Krista Betz still wasn't sure she was fully awake from her nap when she walked to her apartment window and heard someone yelling for her to jump. Smoke billowed into her room. She worried about her cat. Betz decided to make the leap from her second-floor window, toward a man who tried to catch her, but instead her head and body smashed into the pavement of the parking lot. Betz and her fiance, Connor Walters, lost almost everything they owned. She spent just under two weeks at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where she received intensive care including facial reconstruction surgery. When she landed on the concrete, she broke four ribs, both her arms and three vertebrae.
