City paramedics soon will bulletproof gear to use during active shooter situations. The Oshkosh Fire Department will use a $15,050 grant from Capital Credit Union’s Elevate Communities program to buy 10 sets of bulletproof vests, helmets and accessories, said John Holland, a Fire Department spokesman. “When you think of bulletproof vests, you really don’t think of paramedics,” Holland said. “Unfortunately in this day and age they need them.” Paramedics used to treat victims once a crime scene was “100 percent safe,” Holland said. Now teams go into unresolved, dangerous situations to rescue people. “That boundary has shifted, and we are expected to go in quicker and closer than before,” Holland said.
