VIDEO: Firefighters in Stoddard will be a little bit safer the next time they head out on a call thanks to a generous donation. While touring the station, community member Paula Johnson heard about the dangers that firefighters face. To help the department, she bought a navigation system for each of the 25 firefighters. The 'Northern Star' equipment attaches to their masks and allows firefighters to find what direction they're facing when their visibility is limited by smoke. "For our department, it makes our firefighters safer and more efficient. And in turn, it helps every person that we go respond to and help out," said Chief Joe Pfaff. The fire department says the device will help first responders navigate large buildings or find their way out of structures if they get lost.
