The City of Onalaska is facing the possibility of having to replace both its police chief and fire chief at the same time. One of the ideas floated by city leaders proposed not filling those positions and instead creating the position of a safety director to oversee both the police and fire departments. Mayor Joe Chilsen pointed out there were other cities of similar size in Wisconsin that had made similar moves. However, at a meeting Tuesday night, the city's Police and Fire Commission shot the idea down. The city had been waiting to consider candidates for police chief and fire chief until the idea could be considered.
