A house fire in rural Elk Mound left a family without a roof over their head on Wednesday.
The Chippewa Fire District was dispatched to the home on 30th Street around 5:45 p.m. Fire officials said five people were in the home at the time, but luckily everyone was able to get out safely.
"To get the fire under control took about 40 minutes, because the fire had gone up the back, outside of the house and into the attic. That's what took us time. We had to get into the attic and extinguish the fire before we could call it under control," said Deputy Chief John Andersen with Chippewa Fire District.
While the home suffered damage, it likely could have been much worse if not for a Good Samaritan who rushed inside and helped the family get out.
"I ran up to the front door and knocked on it and saw people moving. I said: 'Get out of the house, the house is on fire!' Children were coming out of bedrooms and I went up to make sure they all got out and we got out and away," said Teresa Wadell, the family's neighbor.
