A Sunday morning apartment fire killed a child and left several residents injured in downtown Portage. Police and firefighters responded to the reported fire at 10 a.m. on the fifth floor of the Historic at 207 W. Cook St., commonly referred to by its former name the Ram. “There was a fire on the fifth floor and it was pretty bad,” said second-floor resident Tazia Mills. “The windows had to get broken in just to get oxygen in.” Mills said she learned about the fire from her fiancé, who called her while she was at church. She was at the scene as firefighters worked to put out the blaze. “A lot of people on the fifth floor are saying when they came out of their apartment it was completely blacked out with smoke everywhere,” she said.
