A fire that claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy was caused by his 4-year-old sister playing with matches, according to Portage Fire Inspector Craig Ratz. “It probably took us 7 minutes after we arrived to get water,” Ratz said of the fire Sunday morning in the Historic apartments in downtown Portage.Firefighters knew there was a child trapped in a bedroom on the fifth floor. “We were focused on that search and entry, but there was enough fire that it didn’t allow us to make entry into the room until we applied water. And being a five-story building, there was a little bit of humping hose up the stairway… so 7, 8 minutes before we had water.”
