Fortunately, the house at 404 N. Memorial Drive was unoccupied when it caught fire on Tuesday afternoon. Racine Fire Department Battalion Chief Willie Hargrove said city fire crews were dispatched to the scene after multiple 911 calls about the fire at about 5:33 p.m. Tuesday. Initial reports indicated that the house was “fully engulfed” and that people may be trapped inside proved to be unfounded. But black smoke poured into the sky and flames were visible. The fire was centered on the second floor near the back of the house. A neighbor told officials that she saw people go into the home to check the first floor to make sure there wasn’t anyone inside.
