Fitchburg is taking the next step toward improving fire and emergency medical response to the eastern side the city, breaking ground on a new fire station Friday. A groundbreaking for the new East Fire Station at 2950 South Syene Road is set for 3 p.m. Friday. It will replace Fire Station No. 2 at 5791 Lacy Road. The $8 million project is the second of two stations being built to replace the city’s original stations on Lacy Road and at 5415 King James Way. A new West Station, at 2931 Marketplace Drive, was completed in July 2017; the new East Station is expected to be completed by June 2019. Along with fire services, the new station will also house EMS and ambulances.
