PHOTO: Portage firefighters were called at about 7 p.m. Thursday to reports of visible flames in a vacant building at 2646 New Pinery Road. Traffic in that area of New Pinery was rerouted while firefighters put down the fire and ventilated smoke. Richard Lynn, who owns the building, said the structure had been used until recently for storage, and most of its contents had been emptied, except for some documents due to be shredded. Fire department officials were not available on Thursday to discuss a potential cause of the fire, but Lynn said he thinks juveniles entered the unlocked structure and started the documents on fire, without necessarily intending for the fire to get out of hand. Lynn was walking inside the building at about 7:35 p.m., after the smoke had been removed. From what he can see, he said, damage is minimal.
