New Holstein firefighters Nick Kaat, Brian Burg, and Corey Bratz hold the pieces of the new Hurst jaws-of-life equipment purchased recently by the department. The NHFD held a gun raffle in July during its annual picnic to raise funds for the purchase of the equipment, and other donations helped as well. The department spent $27,000 on the battery-powered cutter, jaws, and spreading ram. Fire Chief Denis Mayer said the equipment is lighter than the department’s previous equipment and also is able to better cut some of the newer materials found in today’s vehicles. It is a 10,000 psi system compared to the previous 5,000 psi system. “The guys like them,” added Lieutenant Keith Price, who said the portability of the equipment is a great advantage as they are not tethered by a hose to a truck. The new equipment is expected to last more than a dozen years as the previous equipment did.
