October is National Fire Prevention Month and Oct. 7-13 was National Fire Prevention Week, and Dells area fire departments are partnering with the Nation Fire Protection Association to promote fire prevention. Started in 1922 following the Great Chicago Fire as fire prevention week, and later expanded to last the month of October, it is the longest running public health and safety observance on record according to the NFPA. The campaign theme for this year is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” The campaign is designed to focus on safely and quickly escaping a fire. People should “look for places fire could start, listen for the sound of the smoke alarm, and learn two ways out of every room,” said James Bowen, deputy chief of the Delton Fire Department.
