The Viola Fire Station served as a place of refuge for residents devastated by recent flooding. Volunteers served meals, provided cleaning supplies, and offered those affected a place to rest. Neighboring fire departments, the Salvation Army, and the American Red Cross provided assistance and resources. The fire station brought the community together, and that is what volunteer firefighters say is critical to getting Viola back on its feet. "The devastation is huge, but it's the aftermath that you get really shaken by," said Heidi Young, a volunteer firefighter with the Viola Area Fire Department and coordinator in the cleanup efforts. "Then you realize what really happened. There's a lot of cleanup, so it's very important."
