The man accused of killing a Lake Mills Fire Department captain while driving drunk on New Year's Eve is scheduled to make his first appearance in court on Thursday. Samuel Cremers of Columbus, 28, is expected to be formally charged in Dane County Court Thursday afternoon. He was arrested by Monona police on tentative charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after crashing into Capt. Chris Truman on the Beltline at the Yahara River bridge. Truman had stopped on the side of a road to help a woman who had lost control of her car while driving in the snow and later died from his injuries at the hospital.
