An east Madison fire caused residents to evacuate a building Sunday morning, leaving 19 residents displaced. A resident in an apartment buildling on the 4700 block of Cottage Grove Road called authorities just after 6 a.m., reporting smoke inside of the building. When crews arrived, alarms were sounding inside the building and residents were evacuating, officials said. Upon entering the apartment, firefighters found that the fire was contained to an apartment on the second floor. According to officials, the fire was extinguished quickly. Madison Metro dispatched a bus as a place for evacuated residents to stay warm. The American Red Cross was providing assistance to the 19 residents who were displaced by the fire, officials said.
