West Virginia State Police arrested a Philippi man accused of trying to set a trailer on fire. On December 8, police responded to 1699 West Teter Creek Road in Philippi after a woman reported that her son, Doyle Summerfield Jr., 21, had set a book on fire and placed it on his mattress. The woman told 911 dispatchers that she had put out the fire, and her son left the home on foot with a knife, according to police. After police arrived on scene, the woman gave a recorded statement, in which she said Summerfield was in his bedroom smoking a cigarette. The woman told troopers that her husband walked by Summerfield's room to take the dogs out, when he saw a fire on Summerfield's bed. Police said the woman told them Summerfield was just sitting there watching it burn. After getting the fire put out, the woman began cleaning off the bed, at which time the defendant said to her, "I hoped this place burned down with you guys in it," according to police.
